Three students from the Computer Science and Statistics departments at the College of Science, Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), won the Innovation in Problem Discovery Award for their AI-powered ‘Ilmify Platform’ project.
The award was presented at the finals of the second International AI in Education Competition, AIREA 2026, held in Hong Kong.
The winning team comprised Nouf bint Abdulhameed al Shamli, Bara’a bint Yousef al Aufi, and Maisoon bint Abdullah al Ambusaidi, under the supervision of Dr Iman bint Said al Hasani.
Winning the award comes in recognition of the team’s innovative approach in utilizing AI technologies to address challenges facing education. The platform allows for the personalization of the learning experience according to students’ needs, generating smart summaries, and providing tools that improve academic performance.
Nouf bint Abdulhameed al Shamli, from the Statistics Department at the College of Science and the team’s representative in the competition, said that the second edition of the International Artificial Intelligence in Education Competition (AIREA 2026), organized by Hong Kong University of Education, is a global platform that brings together innovators and researchers all over the world to develop AI-based educational solutions.
She explained that her team won the Innovative Problem Discovery Award in the Discovery category which is awarded to teams that demonstrate their ability to identify and analyze educational problems innovatively before designing appropriate solutions.
She noted that the Elmfy project is an AI-powered educational platform targets to personalize the learning experience of university students. It transforms university textbooks into structured educational content that includes text, visual and audio materials and mind maps. It also prepares personalized learning plans and analytical reports that help students improve their academic performance taking into account the needs of various groups including students with disabilities and learning difficulties.
Nouf expressed her pride for winning the award and for representing the Sultanate of Oman and Sultan Qaboos University at a global event, praising the university’s support for the team which contributed to this achievement.
